“Storm the Castle”
“Storm the Castle”
Purpose of the game:
Yet another way to reinforce basic math skills without worksheets
Target age group:
ages 5-8 (2 to 8 players)
Description of game:
Players pretend to be medieval soldiers attacking a castle. They must cross a field and a bridge using math skills, finding the difference between two numbers, finding coordinates on a grid, finding ways to combine single digit numbers to get “teen” numbers, and solving simple word problems. All in one game!
This game is cooperative, with the competition being against the enemy inside the castle, who continually catapults large rocks out of the castle. As soon as all the soldiers get inside the castle, they are allowed to carry off loot (that’s where the edible rewards come in).
Time needed:
30-45 minutes
Materials you will need:
Copies of the pattern pages (card stock if possible), scissors, tape, pennies (about 60), two decks of playing cards, a pair of dice, small candies or other edible rewards.
